Gene Therapy for Cardiac Arrhythmias
Conventional approaches to the treatment of arrhythmias are of limited utility. We are developing new approaches to the treatment of arrhythmias in which somatic gene transfer is used to modify cardiac repolarization and/or conduction. The present lecture will provide an overview of my laboratory's work in this area, ranging from vector development to proof-of-concept studies in cells and in vivo. These studies establish the ability of gene transfer to modify electrical behavior towards salutary ends. Nevertheless, gene therapy for arrhythmias in humans needs to await the resolution of a variety of obstacles related to the vectors, the delivery systems and safety.
